June 15, 2007 On Friday, June 15, Timothy Young read poems for CALL TO THE SOUL, the opening evening of THE BONES OF INITIATION, A WORKSHOP ON RE-MEMBERING THE BODY OF RITUAL LIFE, by premier mythologists and storytellers Daniel Deardorff and Martin Shaw. February 22 though February 26 Timothy Young, co-founder of the Jazz Ecstatic, and son, Jesse, visited the University of Texas at Arlington to take in the 2007 UTA Jazz Festival, which featured as guest artist, the great saxophonist Dave Pietro. The Two Boots, five day trip to Texas included a visit to Dave’s composition clinic, big band rehearsal, and a Saturday night concert which featured the UTA jazz ensemble, directed by award winning composer, pianist, UTA faculty member and co-founder of the Jazz Ecstatic, Dan Cavanagh. Also, guest artist, Dave Pietro, who has played with Woody Herman, Lionel Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Maria Schneider, and many others, appeared with the UTA Jazz Orchestra, directed by Tim Ishii, UTA Director of Jazz Studies and premiere saxophonist with the Jazz Ecstatic. Also on the program was the 2006 UTA Festival Sweepstakes winning Jazz Ensemble from Newman Smith High School. The long weekend also included an evening at a Fort Worth jazz club—The Ovation—which served great food and hot mix of jazz of many genres. An evening of jazz standards by Cavanagh and Ishii at the University Club and a Sunday afternoon violin recital, by Martha Walvoord at Irons Concert Hall in Arlington rounded out the trip’s great magical musical mystery tour. With discussions ongoing about the new poetry and music collaboration we’ve named the Jazz Ecstatic expect future announcements about performances and recording. He has been commissioned to compose another piece. He has written a jazz composition inspired by another of Timothy’s poems, JOY SOUP, and it premiered in Lincoln Center, New York, May 17, 2006.             Poet, Timothy Young and singer/songwriter, Yata Peinovich have collaborated to produce Snow Has Fallen—fourteen tracks of music and poetry. These two mature artists clothe lyrics with multiform melodies, driving rhythms and piercing harmonies.  For today’s listener, Young and Yata offer a new trail into the wild realm of spoken word art.  

            These tracks maintain the integrity of Young’s contemporary poetry and feature his gritty vocal performances.  Yata’s fertile garden of guitar sounds and his impeccable singing are highlighted by his melodic compositions.   A chorus here and there, a few poems transformed into songs, and a variety of emotional tones and poignant observations make Snow Has Fallen unique and accessible. 

            Bruce Hecksel engineered the recording and provides layers of musical solos, savvy accompaniments and deft productions.  Add an occasional confection from Dalyce Elliott’s violin, and this work reaches back in time and honors an attention to the natural world of Troubador minstrels while pushing ahead to the Twenty First Century.  It dives into timeless love and cavorts in a delight for the complexities of life.

Timothy traveled to Arlington, Texas to perform a jazz composition in three movements composed by Dan Cavanagh.  Tentatively titled,
